Cause of Orphanhood
Orphan hood is not a new phenomenon in Sudan
and in the Continent of African as well as else where in the World .The high
prevalence of adults mortality rate in most developing countries has always
resulted to living orphans behind and it had never been a problem in most
Sudanese communities. What makes orphanage an area of concern now is its
magnitude and the circumstances surrounding the death of parents and or
caretakers in Sudan. Most parents or adults especially the men are killed in the
seemingly endless civil war in Sudan and the indiscriminating cause of death –
AIDs.
What makes Orphanage an area of concern?
The lost of both parents is itself a big blow
to a child(ren) as they have to struggle to survive by assuming
responsibilities at an early age lacking proper parental guidance, love and most
importantly education thus, living many severely traumatized and without means
of self-reliance or skills to compete in the
labour market It also jeopardizes all
advances made in a child’s welfare and survivorship as enshrined in the Geneva
Convention on the rights of a child such as access to good education, recreation,
health and happy living. This is aggravated by the traditional extended family
and social fabric set up break down due to high migration, weak socio- economic
status to cope with the needs of the families, high poverty and illiteracy
prevalence.
The Sudanese Orphans Support Trust (SOST) like many other Humanitarian
Organisation in Sudan strives to
support the education of orphans. The Founders of the Trust believe in the
saying that
“Feed a hungry man today, he will be hungry; Teach him how to
fish, he can have food tomorrow; Educate his child(ren),
you have given him Future”
